Every man wants to last longer, but what if it becomes too long?

Every man is aware about premature ejaculation; a condition in which a man orgasms sooner than wanted, and rather than a medical condition it is often perceived as a direct reflection of one’s manliness. This has created a stigma that the longer you last in bed, the manlier you are. Although it’s generally considered that lasting longer in bed is a good thing, it isn’t necessarily a sign of better sexual health. In fact, if it takes someone extended periods of sexual stimulation to reach climax it might just be a sign of impaired ejaculation, more commonly known as delayed ejaculation.

What is Delayed Ejaculation?

Best For Him talked to Dr. Raman Tanwar, MCH Urology, senior Andrologist and secretary general of the Men’s health society of India to delve deeper into the realites. “ Delayed ejaculation is an uncommon problem but a very distinctive and distressing one. Delayed ejaculation is a condition in which it takes extended periods of sexual stimulation for a man to reach sexual climax, while some are unable to ejaculate at all. “

Dr Tanwar further said, “As it is not a common occurrence, there is no specific measure of time that indicates delayed ejaculation. Some common reasons of Delayed ejaculation can be attributed to the delay which is causing distress or frustration, extreme fatigue during sexual activity, physical irritation or loss of erection.”

Delayed ejaculation is divided into the following types based on symptoms:

Lifelong vs. acquired.

With lifelong delayed ejaculation, the problem is present from the time of sexual maturity. Acquired delayed ejaculation occurs after a period of normal sexual functioning.

Generalised vs. situational.

Generalised delayed ejaculation isn’t limited to certain sex partners or certain kinds of stimulation. Situational delayed ejaculation occurs only under certain circumstances.

Causes of Delayed Ejaculation.

There are a lot of causes for delayed ejaculation which can largely be categorised into two groups:

  1. Psychogenic, which have psychological origins rather than physical ones : Psychogenic causes include conflicts with partners, different sexual preferences, fear of semen loss, religious beliefs, depression, inability to fantasise as well as sexual misconceptions. Although these causes are psychological in nature; meaning they exist within our minds, it is not easy to cure them. It may take a lot of time, medicine or professional help from doctors or therapists.

2. Organic, which have physical origins : Organic causes are relatively easier to diagnose, organic causes of delayed ejaculation include, hormonal disbalance, nerve related disorders, associated sexual problems, prostate surgery as well as some infections. Even though these causes are easier to identify they can only be treated effectively with proper medical attention and consultation.

“People have certain stereotypical notions about semen ejaculation. They may think that semen ejaculation will weaken their body and might also sense a feeling of nervousness and shame in having a climax. People’s upbringing and development also plays a part in this problem,” Dr. Tanwar told BFH.

How to treat Delayed Ejaculation.

“ Treatment for delayed ejaculation depends on the underlying cause, but it might include taking medication or making changes to medications you currently take, undergoing psychological counselling, or addressing alcohol or illegal drug use. Even though delayed ejaculation is a very distinctive and troublesome condition for both you and your partner, consulting a good andrologist as well as a psychologist is the best course of action.” Dr. Tanwar told BFH.

There are many medications that have been used in the treatment of Delayed ejaculation but none of them have been specifically approved for it. For example, Buspirone which is an antianxiety medication. As delayed ejaculation is also caused by hormonal disbalance like low testosterone levels, it can be treated by low testosterone supplements.

Delayed ejaculation can also be a symptom of depression, anxiety as well as fears adopted by a patient, therefore opting for psychological counselling can help you get better mentally and in turn physically.

There are a lot of ways to go about treating Delayed ejaculation but first and foremost you should get diagnosed by a doctor and consult them before taking any medication or practising self treatment methods you found on the internet.
