Men, Watch out for these Unhealthy Habits

We all have certain habits that lead to healthy living. But we also are not devoid of bad habits that hamper our health and lifestyle. Watch out for these unhealthy habits and ensure physical as well as mental well-being.

Habits are seen as regular tendencies or practices. From a psychological point of view, habit is a fixed way of thinking, feeling and acting. Older the habit, the less the chance of letting them go. With time, these habits become an inevitable part of our life. That is why it is said, “old habits die hard”.

Going ahead in the same line, there are healthy habits that make our lives merrier, but there are unhealthy ones too that we need to watch out for as that can hamper one’s health.

Unhealthy habits hamper one’s physical as well as mental health. We cannot just disconnect a habit from our lifestyle at once, but the first step to discontinue an unhealthy trait is to be aware of it. If you haven’t recognized an unhealthy trait, it is time to find it out and eliminate it from your life as soon as possible.

Here are some of the unhealthy habits that can hamper your health:

Poor sleep schedule

Good sleep is the necessity of our body. Men who have a poor relationship with their sleep can face various health problems. It can hinder body functioning and ability to carry on with work. It also makes us feel irritated most of the time. Sleep deprivation can lead to sleep disorders, low productivity in work and greater chances of dying. It can even lead to many chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, kidney failure and obesity. Lack or even excess sleeping can lead to fatigue. To be at the best of your health, your body needs 6-8 hours of deep sleep.

Sitting for long hours

Men with a desk job seldom take breaks and stay glued to their chairs. Continued sitting for hours can lead to a cluster of problems. It can lead to an abnormal cholesterol level, increase blood pressure and cause body fat to accumulate around the waist. It can also make one prone to cardiovascular diseases and cancer.

Eating too quickly

Many men often do not realise this, but eating too quickly can have a negative impact on your health. When you eat at a fast pace, your brain doesn’t get time to signal fullness. As a result, you end up eating more food than what your body requires, making you consume excess calories that can lead to weight gain.

Cracking knuckles

For numerous men, cracking knuckles is a way of releasing tension. The word often goes around that cracking knuckles can lead to arthritis.

No, it doesn’t cause arthritis. However, excessive cracking of knuckles can cause pain and swelling. If you crack your knuckles with a lot of force, it can cause finger dislocation or ligament sprain. If you face discomfort while cracking knuckles, it’s possible that the joints of the fingers are damaged.

Biting your nails

Nail biting is one of the most common compulsions which falls under the ‘bad habits’ list. It is a completely psychological phenomenon as one bites their nails when they are either nervous, bored or excited. Psychiatrists often categorise it as an obsessive-compulsive disorder. Men who have a habit of biting their nails can suffer from infection, damaged teeth or ingrown nails.

Biting your nails can lead to a bacterial infection called paronychia. Symptoms of this infection can be seen in the form of redness and swelling around the nail cuticles. No matter how many times you wash your hands, it is impossible to get rid of germs and dust from your nails completely. As a result, nail biting can lead to stomach problems. Germs in your nail cuticles can even damage the enamel on your teeth.

Using headphones at a loud volume

Using headphones at loud volume is an unhealthy habit many men are guilty of.

Favourite song blaring through your headphones can be fun, however, the amount of damage it does to your ears is horrific. Those who listen to music at a loud volume are prone to noise-induced hearing loss. Repeated exposure to booming noise damages the cells and membrane of cochlea, an organ within the inner ear.

Self-medication

Self-medication is a dangerous habit one can possess. It can develop many health complications. Drug intake without a physician’s advice can result in incorrect dosage, masking of certain diseases or adverse reactions. In men, an incorrect dosage can lead to infertility as well as adverse effects on the reproductive organs.

Excessive drinking/smoking

Smoking is a bad habit.

Alcohol consumption and smoking can have adverse effects on your mental and physical well-being. It destroys one’s ability to work or even think efficiently. Men with a habit of excessive drinking or smoking can experience a reduced sperm quality, erectile dysfunction and low libido. It can even lead to cancer and cardiovascular diseases.

Conclusion

Habits are an unavoidable aspect of our persona. Every individual has a certain habit that makes him unique and becomes part of his identity. However, unhealthy habits are not something to be proud of and once you recognize them, get rid of them as soon as possible. It is not easy to let go of a habit at one go. While certain habits are only about fixing a proper routine, many need expert help.

If you are someone who is aware of your bad habits, start working in the direction to get rid of it. Unhealthy habits have an ill-effect on your entire lifestyle and creates issues for everyone.
