Here’s Why You Shouldn’t Skip Breakfast

Updated: Jun 23, 2023

It has been recorded throughout history that breakfast not only serves the purpose of filling us up, but also those who skip it are more at risk of diseases. So why take the chance?

After every goodnight’s sleep, the body deserves a nourishment filled breakfast that can not only satisfy our hunger but also gives our body a healthy dose of vitamins and minerals. Being the first meal of the day, it is always important to choose our breakfast with utmost care.

Although, there are many of us who choose to skip breakfast, due to our busy schedules, diets, or some even out of laziness. Being the first meal of the day, breakfast not only breaks the overnight fast but in turn is also great for our metabolism. Experts have also noticed that those who skip breakfast have a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases.

According to a study by Ohio State University, which was published in the online journal ‘Proceedings of the Nutrition Society’, it was noted that adults who skip breakfast are likely to miss out on key nutrients required for our body.

These nutrients can not only help one be fit but are also required to fight off diseases and irregularities pertaining to our mind and body. Some studies have also suggested that eating breakfast can also become a factor in losing weight. Some of the other benefits are:

Keeps your heart healthy

Many studies have made it very clear that those who skip breakfast are more likely to have clogged arteries. The fact is that skipping breakfast not only gives people a bad start to their day but is also linked to many other bad habits that are not healthy for your body and mind. These bad habits in turn lead to hypertension, high blood pressure, obesity, high cholesterol, all of which are never healthy for your heart.

Keeps your weight in check

Another big benefit of having a heavy meal as breakfast is that it curbs intake of food for the day. Starting one’s day with nutrition, calories and a healthy amount of carbs, provides your body with a healthy diet and also makes sure that you follow healthy food habits throughout your day.

Lowers risk of diabetes

According to some experts, when one skips breakfast the insulin level in their body drops and then rises during lunch. This in turn increases the risk of type 2 diabetes as skipping breakfast can cause chronic insulin resistance. When you consume breakfast daily, the body automatically becomes at lower risk of diabetes.

Good for your memory

It has been established that certain breakfast food items can boost one’s brain, enhance short term memory power and also make you and your brain stronger and sharper. Having a breakfast with a mix of fruits, vegetables, low fat, and protein rich food, allows a person to have a better concentration level, which in turn improves productivity.

Breakfast for Anti-ageing

It might sound like we are bluffing but one of the effects of breakfast is that it helps with anti-ageing. Having breakfast helps with the body’s natural process called, ‘autophagy’, a form of detoxification, where it removes cellular junk from the body. The process helps with removing cancerous growth, metabolic dysfunctions, and our faulty parts. For a healthy ageing this process is necessary and becomes more and more important with age.

Apart from the reasons listed above, there are many more reasons why one should not miss out on breakfast. For example, missing out on breakfast can increase your cortisol levels, acidity levels, bad breath, risk of hypoglycemia, risk of obesity and even decrease your immunity.

It has become clear that our body can go through a number of disadvantages when we skip the important meal of our day: breakfast. So, why do it?
